Pro-Jekt

The Lord Dog chews the fat with Kev Rice bassist - Pro-jekt

Live at Labyrinth April 22nd 2006 - photo by Chris Winder

I would describe your sound as that early 80's electro pop feel, or Depeche Mode when they were at their most muscular, darkest and tattoed with the driving guitars of Rammstein thrown in, but maybe you know best. What influences your sound?

We’ve been called many things, not all good, but we like your description ..
Pro-jekt have influences from our dark and twisted past, there’s no particular formula that we stick to ,we just write songs .. we have a lot of respect for both the Goth and Metal scene’s and lots of bands that we grew up with ..

You seem very unpretentious for a Goth band, 'laddish' even. What do you think of the 'precious' tag that most Goth bands seem to get?

A lot of bands do seem to take the whole image very seriously and don’t seem to let go and actually enjoy what they are doing, not that we don’t give 100% and be as professional as possible, we just really enjoy the live thing and we think it comes across on stage. Some of the bands we have gigged with have the ‘image’ and spend a lot of time in the studio, we like to get down and dirty , hot n sweaty and to get out on the road and tour !

You seem to attract a higher proportion of females than males that appreciate you. Now that seems to me much better than sweaty blokes any day, but do you get many offers of meaningless, no questions asked, brief episodes of sex.? If so can I join the band, some of those Goth chicks are hot!!?

Ha Ha ..now that would be telling ..
but, we don’t mind the ‘Gothic Ladies’ coming to the shows at all …
this in turn does attract the male audience , maybe they haven’t come to see Pro-jekt.. but hey..?!

Now I notice that on your new 'Defiance' album, you have a hidden track, your own leftfield cover of Abba's SOS. Was that a random decision or is it a precursor to an album of 70's and 80's cheesy bands covers by Pro-Jekt? Can we expect to see a Cheeky Girls track on the next album?

Hmm.. let me think.....
NO, actually Pro-jekt have always done crazy covers, for us more than anything, and because its ‘fun’, it’s great to see peoples faces when they recognize the tunes !
‘’hang on isn’t that….’’
We did Depeche mode’ just cant get enough’ on our first demo …
As well as Led Zep’s communication breakdown on our ‘Mean times’ ep.
We’ve even done ‘tainted love’ and ‘friends electric’ a long time ago …
As for the Abba S.OS. Although it’s tongue in cheek , to get people talking !
We have actually made a disturbing doomy gothic metal classic!

'Drowning in someone else's soul' and 'Dig my own grave' doesn't seem the sort of songs you write in the pub over a few beers watching the 'footie', its the sort of stuff I would write when I get my tax bill. So who wrote the lyrics and what's the inspiration behind them?

As you point out in a live environment Pro-jekt are all guns blazing Gothic fucking metal !
But as songwriters and as individuals there’s a lot going on, we can be quite deep and intense and inspirational, we are four different guys ..and we bring our own things into the mix. Lyrically these kinds of songs have their own meanings and flavour’s of Love, life and death, but we don’t like to over explain or over analyze, we like the listener to have their own ideas of what the songs mean to them ..

Your music can get quite 'dancey'. Do you find people in the audience throwing 'big box little box' shapes during your songs? Is the incidental effects....’oohh yeah’ ect all down to Al? His keyboards by the way remind me of one of my favourite 80's bands, ‘B Movies’, has he heard of them?, because nobody else has.

I have heard of B MOVIES, but I haven’t heard actually heard anything by them,
Aren’t they originally from Mansfield ? Mick’s hometown, we heard they reformed?
Anyway so cant really say ...sorry, but the samples come from Mysterious Al’ yep.
As for the Dancy beats, yes we’ve had that before, mostly from the hardened trad metallers.. the beat comes pumping in and we see a few people taking the piss with the big fish- little fish - cardboard box hand movements. But as we go along and the guitars start kicking in..we get the impression that these people slowly turn around, and go actually ..this aint half bad !? ( but how do they know these moves eh? Ha ha ! )
We had this at Bloodstock festival, a Fantastic really Traditional heavy metal festival .
The first impression was of.. what the F**K is this.... ?! Then as we where such a breath of fresh air it Turned out we sold out of all our merchandise! Had a storming show .
As we have said before we love Goth and Metal and we mix things that haven’t been.
Done to death in this way ..so some people haven’t heard anything like us before .

Has introducing Mick as vocalist to Pro-Jekt made any major changes, he certainly is a fantastic frontman and a great vocalist?

Yep he has become a part of the band in a way we cant think of himnot ever being in the band !
We had a lot of problems and hardships with previous Vocalist that we don’t like to dwell on...And Mick came in at the right time ,although he had a Baptism of fire.. as we within Months of mick joining the ranks, we landed the Mortiis uk tour which was the biggest thing we had done at the time ....So he was dropped in the deep end, so to speak .
But as a vocalist its given us more depth, we have been able to write the songs we wanted rather than tailor the songs to fit someone’s voice..

Whilst on the subject of Mick. On the Sunday after your appearance at Labyrinth, whilst waiting for Phil 'Sleeping Beauty' May to get out of bed, he pulled an object out which he called 'Cock' and started stroking it. He said female fans like to stroke it as well. What’s the story behind that?

Ah..’Cock .. yes…everybody loves ‘Cock’, maybe I should explain…?
Or maybe people should buy the DVD and see for themselves …ha ha

The Day After Never is a fantastic track as is the video for it, which I can't stop playing....that’s a statement not a question by the way, but where can the readers download it from?

Cheers glad you like the tune…’The Day after Never ‘ is available as a download from the Pro-jekt website www.pro-jekt.org
Or if you want, very soon the Video will be available to buy on DVD
also as well as the 'the day after never’ Video we have SOS video now completed.
A professionally filmed video for the track and a pro filmed Live perfomance and lots of extras live bootlegs and video clips from Pro-jekts Live shows including recent Finland and Belfast shows and of course ‘Cock‘

Finally banal, lazy, pathetic question time. What’s your favourite roadside rescue organization?

Hmmm.. let me think… has to be the fantastic and very well used ‘RAC’
We love them…. and we have had our moneys worth, most definitely .

Thanks for the interview , see you on the road …
